Former Bangladesh Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal (retired) Sheikh Abdul Hannan has been arrested in Qatar in connection with two cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of acquiring illegal wealth and money laundering.

ACC deputy director for public relations Md Aktarul Islam confirmed the arrest but said he did not have details of when, how or by which authority Hannan had been arrested.

The ACC filed the two cases against Hannan and his wife, Tahmida Begum, on July 27, 2025, accusing them of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income and conducting suspicious financial transactions.

ACC deputy director Md Tanzir Hasib Sarker filed the cases with the commission’s integrated district office in Dhaka-1.

Responding to a question, Anti-Corruption Commission secretary Saidur Rahman Khan told journalists at a briefing that Interpol had arrested former air chief Sheikh Abdul Hannan in Doha, Qatar.

‘We came to know about the arrest informally on Saturday, but Interpol formally confirmed it to the ACC on Sunday,’ he said.

A case was filed against Hannan on July 27, 2025, over allegations of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 3.28 crore and money laundering, he added.

Hannan became chief of the Bangladesh Air Force on June 12, 2021, during the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. He retired on June 11, 2024.

The Hasina government fell on August 5, 2024, following a mass uprising led by students and supported by the public.
