Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday administered the oath of office to newly elected members of parliament Mirza Faisal Amin and Eliza Zaman at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the speaker’s office in the afternoon, with parliament secretariat secretary Mohammad Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan conducting the proceedings.

Prime minister Tarique Rahman and home minister Salahuddin Ahmed attended the ceremony.

Mirza Faisal Amin, a Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate, won the Thakurgaon-1 by-election held on October 29.

The constituency fell vacant after BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president.

Eliza Zaman, a member of the BNP central executive committee, was declared elected to the 23rd reserved women’s seat in the 13th parliament by the Election Commission on Monday.

The seat, numbered 323 (Women-23), fell vacant after BNP lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti resigned on October 1 following controversy over an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.

BNP chairman Tarique Rahman had subsequently instructed her to resign.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the two newly elected MPs signed the oath book in the parliament secretary’s room in accordance with parliamentary procedure.

Deputy speaker Kayser Kamal, chief whip Nurul Islam Moni, other whips, members of parliament and officials of the parliament secretariat were also present.
