Three people, including a married couple, succumbed to their injuries following a gas leak explosion in the Kanchpur area of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj.
The victims were among four individuals who sustained severe burn injuries in the blast late Sunday night. They died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka between early Thursday morning and afternoon.
The deceased were Sharif Hossain, 34, his wife Rozina Akter, 30, and Rozina’s brother Riaz. Rozina died around 3:45 am on Thursday, while Sharif died shortly after at about 4:00 am. Riaz died at 2:15pm on Thursday in the Intensive Care Unit.
Sultan Mahmud Shikder, resident surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the deaths. He stated that Rozina suffered 60 per cent burns, while Sharif and Riaz each sustained 40 per cent on their bodies.
Dr Shikder said that the fourth victim, building caretaker Roni Miah, remains in critical condition with 70 per cent burn injuries.
According to local sources, the explosion occurred about 1:30am on Sunday, October 11, on the second floor of Islam Tower, a six-storey building owned by Shah Alam Miah in Sonapur Uttarpara village under Sonargaon upazila.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the blast occurred due to a gas leak from a compressor line installed to increase gas pressure. Four individuals from two families living in the apartment were severely burned in the incident and rushed to the hospital, where three members of the same family succumbed to their injuries four days later.
